Each Voter's Edition Element comes complete with a custom shock mount, pop shield, and is supplied with a an official Aston Family Developer certificate, a letter of thanks from Aston CEO James Young. Element is a side-fire single pattern cardioid microphone, utilising unique capsule technology developed by Aston Microphones. The design of the mic is both innovative and stunning, combining aesthetic elements of both vintage and modern architectural design.

The mic badge is translucent purple, backlit with an LED, such that when the mic receives 48v phantom power, the badge is lit up from behind and glows deep 'Aston' purple.

The Voting Process so far

More than 2000 musicians, engineers and producers out there have now had their say in Project Element, providing more than 36,000 data-points for the Aston design team to use in development, and more are joining each day. Remember, even though round 1 is now closed for voting, you can register to vote at any time and join in at round 2 on June 1st to make your opinions count as the project homes-in on deciding the final sound of the worlds first 'Peoples Microphone'.

The Aston team have painstakingly analysed the voters’ preferences and tailored Round 2 of the voting process to make sure it will be another significant step towards creating something really special. The Element prototypes have now been re-voiced in line with the voting. Out go the worst performing mics from round 1 but some of the best of the competitors’ mics remain, alongside the Element. Again, you won’t know which mic is which as Aston continue to remove any possible bias from the process, and the entire process is being peer reviewed by several key music Technology publications. 

We have also changed the performers for this round to keep things fresh and fair. For round 2 the female vocal takes are by X-Factor star Roxy Yarnold while male vocals and guitar parts have been performed by Aston’s own in-house musicians.

While other companies (particularly in the software sector) invite their customers to become beta-testers, this is invariably to check a product which is pretty-much already finished. Never before in the audio industry has the actual SOUND of a product been decided by the eventual users from the early stages of development.

Aston have taken Element to prototype stage, so we have the chassis and the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the electronics in place, but the most important stage of all, the voicing – which gives each mic out there its own character and distinguishes it from all the others – has been left to you.

By participating in Project Element, thousands of musicians, engineers and producers from all over the world, have had their say in the final heart and soul of this unique and beautiful microphone.
